Of Maps and Totes

I.

I love maps. I really, really do. My first grown-up job was in a dull office and one of the things I remember fondly was the DHL's map that I stared to everyday looking/picking a new imaginary destination for an imaginary trip. I that map I discovered some places I didn't know existed, like the Sandwich Islands.

II.

My friends V & O got married a week ago in London. Their wedding was really awesome and included a boat trip, a ninja band and a picnic. I couldn't attend but they asked me to design the wedding souvenirs and I was truly happy because it was the first time outside of school (where I used to draw the maps of that country formerly known as Venezuela) that I get to draw/imagine/create a map. They post the map on their web and printed a simplified version on canvas totes.

Mr. Phill, also a friend of V & O, was the photographer at their wedding and he took the photos that you see in this post, along with some other awesome wedding pics. He also wrote on his blog a really nice story about the whole day. Have a look at his page and his blog, you'll enjoy it :)

Six Months

The world is ending, smile :)

For those of you who don't know me, I must say that the idea of the world ending this next December fascinates me. Whether you believe in the Mayan prophecies or not, the human kind its been waiting for this moment for thousands of years, and at the end (pun intended) we are the ones that will see what is going to happen. If anything happens at all of course. That's something special, innit?

Some would say that all of this is about a change in the world that is already happening, and I totally agree, but I'm not talking about that, I'm interested in the existence of an expiration date and how we are reacting to it, from the most skeptical to the Harold Camping followers.

I've been keeping a 2012 Tumblr, with articles from magazines and newspapers, some very scientific, other just crazy like the Doomsday Dating Site or the Top 5 End of the World Destinations. Also two years ago I made an end-related t-shit collection (in the photo my friend Cristina is wearing one). And this last December I made a beginning-related tote. After every end, there's always a new beginning. Or so they say. They also say the world might end in exactly six months, smile :)

PS: I've found out today that this next 21 of December is called: TEOTWAWKI, short for "the end of the world as we know it". Go figure.

Las Rayas

This is the jacket of the new book of Rodrigo Blanco Calderón, Las Rayas, soon to be published. The cover photo is mine... yay! It's my first photo to be published, hopefully not the last. I'll let you know more about the book when I know more. I want to read it asap!

PS: I was updating my blog design and adding some more tags and apparently I republished this post. It seems that if I delete it, its going to disappear altogether from my blog, so I'm not going to. Well, I didn't mean to, but here it is again: Las Rayas :)

Emotional Pantone

A couple of weeks ago I saw on TV a little bit of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. As I was watching I started to remember how I loved that film the first time I saw it. I thought it was amazing how that wonderful couple (Gondry/Kaufman) managed to create Lacuna Inc, something that I guess we all have wished it existed at some point of our lives. I was happy to see that Jim Carrey was a surprisingly perfect fit for the Joel character, same goes to Mark Ruffalo, Kirsten Dunst and (creepy) Elijah Wood, and specially I loved Clementine, that "fucked up girl looking for her own peace of mind", that had so much yet so little in common with me.

Anyway. Clementine's hair-color changed depending on her mood. When she and Joel meet on the train she was wearing it blue, Blue Ruin. This name supposedly was given to that color (and mood) because of a Tom Waits song: 9th and Hennepin. Dark.

It is known by everyone that colors have influence in our emotions. I've been reading that since my early days in uni, for saying the least. But just so you know the reason I decided to make this badges was not that distant theoretical knowledge, it was Blue Ruin, Clementine, Eternal Sunshine, Montauk and its overrated sand. Someone has to have the job of naming colors, she said on that train. Why not me?

The badges are almost ready. I'm adjusting colors and designing the packaging. I'll keep you posted about this and I hope you like them.

"How happy is the blameless vestal's lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd."

This Week

This week, thanks to my friend Alejandro, I had the opportunity of participating in a really nice project. I cannot say more for now, but you'll definitely see it when is ready.

Meanwhile here are some photos I took this (incredibly hot) week around Buenos Aires :)

How was your week/weekend?

Doppelgänger

This is the text I wrote for a nice Venezuelan magazine called Mono. Each issue of Mono is about an specific subject, this number's theme was opposites.

First, you can read my rough translation to English, then the original text in Spanish.

Hope you like it! x

Doppelgänger

I.

The last couple of months it happened to me quite often that when I go out, I see someone's doppelgänger. And I'm not talking about those of celebrities or people who I care about. No. These are the evil twins of random people. Strangers I wouldn't think about under any other circumstances: the man from a BP's service station in El Cafetal, the coffee-boy from a bakery in Santa Eduvigis, my mom's nasty neighbor from the third floor back in Caracas.

The minute the encounter happens, I start doubting, not about the doppelgänger’s ID because some mysterious neuron manages to identify them with a very scary precision, but of my mental health in general. I don't know if this is about nostalgia or if it's just a nervous breakdown. The only thing that appears really clear to me is that my brain is playing dirty to me.

II.

Most of the people I know called me Ana. I have a very important amount of nicknames and each and everyone belongs to a different moment of my life, nevertheless my other identity is called simply Patricia, my second name.

Thinking about that now I realize that Patricia began to exist since I was a little girl. Every time I was naughty that was the name my mum chose to lecture me. Patricia, come here, she used to say with a deadly serious voice. Ana managed to escape all the time. Ana was incapable of breaking a thermometer just to play with Mercury.

Patricia, say those who have met her as a grown-up, is my opposite. The one that takes my place to do those things I wouldn't dare. She usually appears in high-stress situations, important decision-making moments, or in nights of heavy drinking and partying. Those nights that lasts until morning light and then a little longer. Sometimes I could swear that I've seen Patricia coming into the party and look at me from the other side of the room while holding that glass of wine I shouldn't drink.

III.

Doppelgänger stories are very popular in literature, paranormal activity books and psychiatric offices. Their existence could even be explained under quantum mechanics principles. Our doubles would be probabilities of ourselves in different universes. Alan Guth, a famous MIT's physicist once said, "there is a universe in which Elvis is alive and Al Gore is president". I wonder if Alan has a second name that his mother used to reprehend him when he was little.

The possibility (or probability) of Patricia truly fascinates me and intrigues me. I like to think of her, walking around, always on the other side of the road. Think that someday I going to get to watch her talking with the magazine-stand woman near my home or next to that guy that I went to uni with but I cannot remember his name.

Doppelgängers, can't live with them... can't live without them.

I.

Doppelgängers... can’t live with them, can’t live without them.

Sweet Weekend

Today is a beautiful autumn day in Buenos Aires. I would say almost perfect. I'm in a good mood and I didn't fail my German test (at least the failure was not as epic as I thought it might be... ich glaube und ich hoffe!). Also my mom sent me some photos from Caracas' Reading Fest, a beautiful event outdoors (that does not happen often enough in Venezuela) where everything is about books. There you can find "Las Rayas" the book of Rodrigo Blanco Calderón, its cover photo is mine... it looks so nice! I'm waiting for mine to read it, then I'll tell you everything about it, by now you just hace to judge the book by its cover... and hopefully -in this case- like it!

Enjoy some easy going music for a happy weekend, featuring: Yellow Ostrich, Two Door Cinema Club, Metronomy, Shout Out Louds, The National, Thieves Like Us, The Kills and Broken Bells.
