My Friends: Germán Herrera



Awesome designer, animator, comic illustrator, story-teller, and a super cool friend. From time to time he enjoys making stories about the people he knows, specially his kid sister and his friends. The one in the drawing is me, and although I'm a wicked witch I loved the story he wrote.


"The interview with patient "L" was without any doubt peculiar. Of course you could say that about every person that steps into the office, but this one had some extra value because she suffered from some kind of language-curse. 

An innocent spectator  might think that she only mixed different languages and accents when she speaks, but the sounds that escaped her throat were no other than diabolic words. Most likely a consequence of the studies she recently made. That was easy to deduct from the School of Magic and Necromancy crest stitched in her tote.


According to her story, after a brief but successful time as End of the World Prophet, she decided to add to her resume an Apocalyptic Management and Cults Administration specialization. For her thesis dissertation she broke her soul into little buttons she handled to her followers. With those innocent little objects she would be able to catch the minds and hearts of the entire world... and maybe she would become immortal.


Knowing that she will never be alone and considering her love for classics and cliches, she is planning to take her knowledge to good old (but actually new) England."

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.





Of all the things that are being said right now about Steve Jobs I really like to remember the speech he gave in Stanford in 2005 named How to Live Before You Die, here are some extracts:


Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. About books



Today I found two interesting things related to books. The first one is the work of illustrator Claudia Varosio, you should definitely check her Etsy Shop to see nice illustrations, like this one here, of several classic books and films. Even though there's kind of a boom about doing alternative posters for movies, she manage to not follow the same path that others, and her style stands out. I specially like the posters for E.T. and A Single Man.

My second discovery of the day was this site called The Browser, Writing Worth Reading, as they say. They have a section called Five Books, where people recommend their favorite five books in relation to an specific topic, can be Shakespeare, can be War, can be Poetry, or as it is in their latest post can be Inspiration, and the books were picked by Woody Allen. One of his picks was Catcher on the Rye, that reminded me of Claudia's poster and that's why I ended up writing this post.

Interesting story about Kafkas book's rights, colourful jackets illustrations and Kafka love in Peter Mendelsund's Blog Jacket Mechanical.

"Maybe loving Kafka means no more than admiring his downright peculiarity...he is just so anomalous and extraordinary a writer, so particular in his assets, so without precursor."

Sometimes i just feel empty

Apuesto que alguna vez has dicho que te sientes atrapado en una caja o tal vez te han dicho, originalísimamente, que debes pensar 'outside the box' (el equivalente gringo de fumarse una lumpia), bueno, las ilustraciones de Kata me hacen pensar que tal vez tenemos más cosas en común con las cajas que ese par de clichés.

Las ilustraciones pertenecen a una serie llamada Diario de una caja. Puedes ver más del trabajo de Kotryna Zukauskaite, en su página, y también puedes también visitar su tienda en Society6.

I bet that at least once you've said that you feel trapped in a box, or maybe been told to think outside of one, well it turns out that you might have more things in common with a box than just those two clichés.

The illustrations belong to Kotryna Zukauskaite and are part of a series called Diary of a box. I simply loved them. Check out her page here and her store in Society6.

Hoy

.



Escribí por primera vez la fecha: 01 de enero de 2010.

Imagino mi viernes en esa nueva década como si fuera un recuerdo. Logro sentir mi desconcierto trasnochado con rescoldos de alguna fiesta del fin del mundo. Me veo pensando en ese cielo que me espera, y que ya no es más celeste, mientras contemplo una vieja postal de la Vía Láctea. Siento algo de la ansiedad que me genera pensar en la maleta, el café, los impuestos, las despedidas... y en cómo una vez más el prometedor futuro se me hizo tan rápido un antiayer.

Imagino un recuerdo y aunque no me guste, no sé cómo evitarlo.
