Microworlds and watercolors

London Bridge by Lily Forwood.

 Food City by Lily Forwood.

Yesterday I went to have a look at the MA Degree Shows of Camberwell School of Arts. The show featured the work of graduates of MA Designer Maker, Illustration, Digital Arts and Printmaking.

My friend Lorraine Lam presented her amazing functional/symbiotic jewelry line. I love her proposal, the idea of this micro-worlds / secret stashes / time capsules, that you can carry along with you as a ring or a necklace and play with them, modified them, make them disappear whenever you want just to start again. It's a wonderful invitation. And I want all her rings. All. You can have a look at more pieces here.

Among the other interesting things I saw was the illustration work of Lily Forwood. The beauty of incompletness really got me, as well as the deepness she manage to print in the paper with just some blots of watercolor. Have a look at her page here.

And if you want to go to Camberwell School of Arts to see everything, here's more info.

Of Maps and Totes

I.

I love maps. I really, really do. My first grown-up job was in a dull office and one of the things I remember fondly was the DHL's map that I stared to everyday looking/picking a new imaginary destination for an imaginary trip. I that map I discovered some places I didn't know existed, like the Sandwich Islands.

II.

My friends V & O got married a week ago in London. Their wedding was really awesome and included a boat trip, a ninja band and a picnic. I couldn't attend but they asked me to design the wedding souvenirs and I was truly happy because it was the first time outside of school (where I used to draw the maps of that country formerly known as Venezuela) that I get to draw/imagine/create a map. They post the map on their web and printed a simplified version on canvas totes.

III.

Mr. Phill, also a friend of V & O, was the photographer at their wedding and he took the photos that you see in this post, along with some other awesome wedding pics. He also wrote on his blog a really nice story about the whole day. Have a look at his page and his blog, you'll enjoy it :)

My Friends: Germán Herrera

Awesome designer, animator, comic illustrator, story-teller, and a super cool friend. From time to time he enjoys making stories about the people he knows, specially his kid sister and his friends. The one in the drawing is me, and although I'm a wicked witch I loved the story he wrote.

"The interview with patient "L" was without any doubt peculiar. Of course you could say that about every person that steps into the office, but this one had some extra value because she suffered from some kind of language-curse.

An innocent spectator  might think that she only mixed different languages and accents when she speaks, but the sounds that escaped her throat were no other than diabolic words. Most likely a consequence of the studies she recently made. That was easy to deduct from the School of Magic and Necromancy crest stitched in her tote.

According to her story, after a brief but successful time as End of the World Prophet, she decided to add to her resume an Apocalyptic Management and Cults Administration specialization. For her thesis dissertation she broke her soul into little buttons she handled to her followers. With those innocent little objects she would be able to catch the minds and hearts of the entire world... and maybe she would become immortal.

Knowing that she will never be alone and considering her love for classics and cliches, she is planning to take her knowledge to good old (but actually new) England."

Fingers crossed Ger ;)

The Beginning is Near

This is my last design: The Beginning is Near. If the end is near, as the prophecies, Anonymous, and the beard guy in the corner said is near, well, a new beginning is near too... and personally I rather focus on that. For me 2012 hopefully is going to be a year full of changes and beginnings (fingers crossed).

If you like this tote bag, that's a very good news, and if you desperately want to buy one, is a better one and you can do it in my Etsy Shop clicking here.

Milton Glaser Words of Wisdom

Milton Glaser – on the fear of failure. from Berghs' Exhibition '11 on Vimeo.

"Never fear failure so much that you refuse to try new ways of thinking and doing.
Like Louis E. Boone once said, the saddest summery of a life contains
three descriptions: Could have, might have and should have."

Thanks to Creative Review super cool blog I discovered this collective graduation project from the Berghs School of Communication where they invite famous inspiring people, from Stefan Sagmeister to Paulo Coelho, to discuss the fear of failure. This students define themselves as risk takers, so fear of failure is something that might cross their minds kind of often, but as they say "to create challenging and compelling communication and design we have to be daring". My favorite video was Milton Glaser's, his words certainly get to me.

If you happen to be in Sweden the exhibition will be May 26-29th
at Berghs School of Communication, Sveavägen 34, 111 34 Stockholm.

My Friends: Piktorama

I am lucky to have very talented friends, for example my friend Amaranta aka Piktorama. An incredible illustrator with an extraordinary sense of humor and taste in shoes.

She recently collaborated with the German label Lin Fashion and the results are the incredibly original clothing that you see in the photos. I didn't know any of that until today and I'm very excited about it.

If you wish you can pay a visit to Piktorama's Etsy to see more or her work, and to Lin Fashion Project to have a look of the entire Winter 2011-2012 Collection.
